What We Work With / Individual Therapy

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which you work one to one with a psychologist. We look at what you are finding difficult, at patterns that keep repeating, and at how you feel. Sessions last 45 minutes and are usually weekly. Where we start is decided together.

What people often bring:

  • Anxiety, panic and chronic stress
  • Depression and emotional burnout
  • Low self-esteem and self-sabotage
  • Loss, grief and major life changes
  • Relationship difficulties and loneliness
  • Personal growth and identity exploration

How do we work?

Initial Assessment

In the first session we listen to you and your reason for coming. This session carries no commitment; simply share what you feel ready to.

How We'll Go On

CBT, psychodynamic therapy, or the two used together. Which way we go on is something we talk through.

Regular Sessions

We typically progress with 45-minute sessions once a week. Each session builds on the last.

Flexible Format

In-person at our Famagusta office or online sessions via secure video platform are both available.

When do people come to individual therapy?

A problem does not need to be "big enough". Feeling overwhelmed, low or stuck is reason enough. If something has lasted longer than a couple of weeks, or has started to affect how your days work, that is a reasonable point to talk to someone.

You do not need to wait for a crisis. Most people come while life is still running, but one part of it keeps catching.

What happens in a session?

A session lasts 45 minutes. You open the conversation; the psychologist listens, asks questions and shares what they notice. The next session picks up where the last one left off.

You do not have to say everything. You decide what to share and when. Some subjects only become speakable months in, and that is ordinary.

Sessions and your personal information are protected in line with confidentiality principles.

How do we decide which approach to use?

We do not apply a single model. The approach is chosen together, based on the subject, why you came and what you want to work on. The table below shows where each approach tends to be used; in most processes they are combined.

Approach Often used for
CBTAnxiety, panic, obsessive thoughts, repeating thought patterns
Psychodynamic therapyLong-standing low mood, repeating relationship patterns, identity questions
ACTEnergy spent fighting anxiety, burnout, drifting from your values
Motivational interviewingWanting to change but not starting, ambivalence, changing habits

How many sessions does individual therapy take?

It varies by person and by subject. When working on a defined issue, most processes are completed within 8–20 sessions. Deeper work can run longer.

We review where we are together at regular intervals. If you want to stop, you can say so; there is no obligation to continue.
